Get involved, become a delegate of the CERN personnel

In Echo No. 275, we announced the upcoming elections to the CERN Staff Council.

In this edition of Echo, we will inform you about the election process, which begins with a call for applications.

All Staff, Fellows and Associates, who are members of the Staff Association, can get involved and submit their application from 11 September at 8.00 am, until 13 October at 5.00 pm.

Do not hesitate any longer, fill in the application form, and stand in the elections to the Staff Council, so that you can represent and defend your colleagues, the CERN personnel.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A DELEGATE?

If you were to ask several delegates this question, the answers would undoubtedly vary greatly depending on their interests, their experiences, and their motivations.

The standard response and official line is that (http://staff-association.web.cern.ch/bodies/elections) being a delegate is to:

  • Use your skills for the benefit of all;
  • Bring a new vision to the Staff Council;
  • Propose new methods and innovative solutions.

Yet, being a delegate is also to:

  • Acquire new skills and put them into practice;
  • Be trained in various fields;
  • Work in a diverse team;
  • Work in the interest of the Organization.

When asked, one of your current delegates was eager to share in a few lines their view of what it means to be a delegate. It is to:

  • Have CERN’s interests at heart;
  • Want to go beyond the work that is assigned to us by the hierarchy;
  • Accept to serve the community of CERN, the Organization that is more than just an employer for us since it also provides us with the social protection that States must provide their citizens: the retirement pension, as well as health and accident insurance coverage;
  • Want to see CERN from a different angle, through a different lens, all the while discovering aspects that are not that well known;
  • Recognise that the greatest asset of CERN is its personnel, in the broad sense of the word, meaning not only the employed but also the associated personnel, the visitors and the users, who together form the community of the CERN personnel;
  • Commit to serve our colleagues, to help them in their daily lives and with the difficulties or concerns they may encounter in their work, in relations with the hierarchy, or in their social life, throughout their working life;
  • Have the opportunity to debate and discuss important issues that can have a great impact on the life and future of CERN. It is also to have a chance to propose new ideas to influence the future of the Organization.

Broadly speaking, being a delegate means above all devoting oneself to the service of our community and thereby expressing a deep commitment towards CERN.
